Suyi Davies Okungbowa’s standalone novels show his range. David Mogo, Godhunter (2019) is urban fantasy set in Lagos, following a demigod fighting to survive after Yoruba gods descend on the city. Lost Ark Dreaming (2024) is science fiction about the last inhabitants of a sinking island tower.
David Mogo, Godhunter was Okungbowa’s debut novel, published by Abaddon Books. The story draws heavily on Yoruba mythology, with orisha (gods) crashing into modern Lagos and upending daily life. David Mogo, a demigod scraping by as a bounty hunter, gets pulled into a job that puts him between warring divine factions.
Lost Ark Dreaming takes a different approach entirely. Set in the future on a massive tower-island called the Pinnacle, the novella follows residents on different floors as the structure begins to fail. The five-year gap between these two books reflects Okungbowa’s growing ambition, and Lost Ark Dreaming was a finalist for several awards after its release.
