Sue Townsend began her writing career in theatre before the Adrian Mole novels made her famous. The Great Celestial Cow (1984) dealt with the experiences of Asian women in Leicester and showed a more serious side to her writing. Ten Tiny Fingers, Ten Tiny Toes (1990) was another original stage work.
She also adapted The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole for the stage in 1982. Her plays are less well known than her novels, but they show the range of her interests and her ability to write for different forms.
