Stuart Palmer contributed short stories to a number of mystery anthologies over the second half of the twentieth century. These collections bring together work from many writers in the genre, and Palmer’s contributions sit alongside stories by other well-known mystery authors of the era. His short fiction often features the same wit and tightly constructed plotting that made his Hildegarde Withers novels popular.
The anthologies range widely in theme. 20 Great Tales of Murder (1952) and Daring Detectives (1969) are broad mystery collections, while The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1987) gathers pastiche stories set in the world of Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective. Murder On The Railways (2003) collects crime fiction set aboard trains, and Phantom Perfumes And Other Shades (2000) takes a turn toward supernatural mystery. Together, they offer a good sampling of Palmer’s range as a short story writer outside his novel-length work.
