Stuart M. Kaminsky’s non-fiction career ran parallel to his mystery writing. As a professor of film studies at Northwestern University and later at Florida State University, he wrote extensively about cinema and television. His biographies of Gary Cooper, John Huston, and Clint Eastwood drew on his academic expertise, and his studies of American film and television genres became standard texts in film courses.
Kaminsky’s non-fiction includes American Film Genres (1974), a critical study of popular film; Coop: The Life and Legend of Gary Cooper (1979); and practical guides like Basic Filmmaking (1981) and Writing for Television (1988). Behind the Mystery (2005) turned his analytical eye toward the genre he practiced most as a fiction writer.
