The Stolen Empire series reimagines the life of Catherine the Great as YA historical fiction. Queen of Someday (2014) introduces young Sophie, a German princess brought to the Russian court as a potential bride for the future Tsar. Queen of Tomorrow (2015) and Queen of Always (2015) follow her transformation into Catherine, navigating the treacherous politics of the Russian court.
The Winter Queen (2019), The Hollow Queen (2019), and The Broken Queen (2020) expand the series beyond Catherine’s early years. The books use real historical events as scaffolding but take creative liberties to build a YA story about a young woman finding her power in a world that wants to use her as a pawn. The series is Ficklin’s best-known work.
