Stephen Wright’s five novels span almost forty years and cover a wide range of American experience. Meditations in Green (1983) is a Vietnam War novel told through fragmented, psychedelic prose. M31: A Family Romance (1988) follows a suburban family obsessed with UFOs and alien contact.
Going Native (1994) is a dark road novel about violence and disconnection, while The Amalgamation Polka (2006) tackles the Civil War through the story of a boy born to abolitionist parents. Processed Cheese (2020), his most recent novel, is a satire about a couple who receive a mysterious bag of cash and the absurd consequences that follow. Each novel is different in subject but shares Wright’s dense, rhythmic prose style and his interest in the stranger corners of American life.
