The Starstream series consists of two connected novels by Jeffrey A. Carver, published in 1988 and 1990. From a Changeling Star introduces a scientist named Willard Ruskin who discovers that his body has been secretly modified by nanotechnology. He is drawn into a plot involving a supernova that threatens inhabited worlds, and he must figure out who altered him and why before time runs out.
Down the Stream of Stars shifts the story to a massive colony ship called Charity, traveling through an interstellar phenomenon known as the starstream. The ship carries thousands of passengers on a generation-spanning voyage, and the crew faces both internal conflicts and strange encounters along the way. The two books share a universe but can be read on their own, with Down the Stream of Stars taking place well after the events of the first book.
