The Star Wars: X-Wing series focuses on starfighter combat and military operations in the Star Wars galaxy. Starting with Rogue Squadron in 1996, the series follows two main fighter squadrons: the famous Rogue Squadron and the covert-ops Wraith Squadron. The first several books deal with Rogue Squadron’s missions in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor, while later entries shift focus to the Wraiths, a misfit unit that combines piloting skills with commando tactics. The series ran through 2012, with Mercy Kill serving as a much later follow-up.
Reading in publication order is the best approach, since the books build on each other and share recurring characters whose stories develop from one novel to the next. The X-Wing series is known for focusing on pilots and soldiers rather than Jedi, giving readers a different perspective on the Star Wars universe compared to the main saga novels.
