The Cold Equations trilogy is a TNG novel arc that deals with artificial intelligence and the question of what counts as a life. The Persistence of Memory and Silent Weapons (both 2012), followed by The Body Electric (2013), form a connected story that follows up on themes about synthetic life that have been central to TNG since Data first appeared.
David Mack uses the trilogy to explore the consequences of creating artificial beings with consciousness, a subject that has become only more relevant since these books were published.
