Junji Ito’s standalone manga works cover a wide range of horror subgenres. Remina (2005) imagines a planet-sized organism heading toward Earth. No Longer Human (2019) is Ito’s manga adaptation of Osamu Dazai’s classic Japanese novel about alienation and self-destruction. Dissolving Classroom (2013) follows a boy whose apologies cause the people around him to physically melt. Sensor (2019) involves a mysterious volcanic eruption and cosmic threads connecting to an old curse.
The standalones also include Fragments of Horror (2014), a collection of short pieces, and the comedic Junji Ito’s Cat Diary (2009), where Ito draws his real-life experience of adopting cats in his horror art style. The Liminal Zone (2022) and Mimi’s Tales of Terror (2023) are among his most recent works.
