Bill Wallace wrote thirty standalone children’s novels between 1980 and 2009. His debut, A Dog Called Kitty (1980), tells the story of a boy overcoming his fear of dogs when a stray puppy appears on his family’s farm. The book won multiple state awards and set the template for Wallace’s career: animal-centered stories with rural American settings and emotional depth.
Other popular titles include Beauty (1988), about a girl and a blind horse; Trapped in Death Cave (1984), an adventure story; and Snot Stew (1989), told from a cat’s perspective. Wallace’s books feature straightforward prose and genuine feeling, and many were staples of elementary school reading lists throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
