The Spirit’s Princess duology by Esther M. Friesner is set in ancient Japan and follows a young woman with the ability to communicate with spirits. Like Friesner’s other Princess duologies (Nobody’s Princess and Sphinx’s Princess), the series reimagines the youth of a legendary figure, giving her agency and adventure.
Spirit’s Princess (2012) introduces the heroine as she discovers her gift and struggles against the expectations placed on her by her family and society. Spirit’s Chosen (2013) continues her story as she comes into her own. The books blend historical detail about ancient Japanese culture with fantasy elements, creating a setting that feels grounded while still making room for the supernatural.
