Spirit Animals launched in 2013 as a collaborative publishing project from Scholastic, pairing multiple well-known children’s authors with a shared fantasy world. In Erdas, some children form a bond with a spirit animal during a ceremony called the Nectar Ceremony, gaining enhanced abilities. Wild Born introduces four kids from different corners of the world who each summon a Great Beast, one of the legendary animals thought to be extinct. Their bonds draw them into a conflict against a force called the Devourer that threatens to consume all of Erdas.
The main series runs seven books from Wild Born through The Evertree (2015), with each entry written by a different author. Sutherland set the tone with Wild Born, establishing the characters of Conor, Abeke, Meilin, and Rollan and the rules of the spirit animal bond. The companion anthologies, Tales of the Great Beasts and Tales of the Fallen Beasts, fill in the history of the world’s most famous spirit animals. The series was also tied to an online game where readers could discover their own spirit animal.
