Spells, Swords, & Stealth begins with NPCs (2014), in which a group of tabletop RPG non-player characters are forced to take on a quest after the actual player characters die in a bar fight. The NPCs have to pretend to be adventurers while navigating a fantasy world that follows game logic.
The series runs five books through Noble Roots (2022), with each entry expanding the world and the characters’ understanding of what they are. It plays with the conventions of tabletop gaming and fantasy fiction in a way that is funny without being mean about either genre. The series is best read in order, as the characters grow and the stakes increase with each book.
