The Souichi stories feature one of Junji Ito’s most unusual characters. Souichi Tsujii is a creepy, antisocial kid who chews on iron nails and tries to use voodoo curses on his family, classmates, and anyone else who annoys him. Unlike most of Ito’s work, the Souichi stories lean toward dark comedy rather than pure horror, with Souichi’s schemes typically backfiring on him.
The character first appeared in the late 1990s and was collected in an English omnibus edition (Soichi) in 2023. The stories are a lighter entry point into Ito’s catalog, though they still have the unsettling edge that defines his art.
