Sophie Mackintosh’s standalone novels share common concerns about power, gender, and the body, but each occupies a different fictional register. The Water Cure (2018) is a dystopian fable about three sisters raised in isolation. Blue Ticket (2020) is set in a society that assigns women’s reproductive roles by chance. Cursed Bread (2023) draws on a real historical event in 1950s France, filtering it through a narrator caught up in desire and deception.
Her upcoming novel Permanence (2026) continues her interest in intimate relationships shaped by larger forces. Though none of these novels share characters or settings, readers will recognize Mackintosh’s spare, unsettling prose style across all of them. Each book works as a standalone reading experience.
