The Sookie Stackhouse series (also called the Southern Vampire Mysteries) is set in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, where waitress Sookie Stackhouse discovers that vampires have “come out of the coffin” and revealed their existence to the world.
Sookie is a telepath who has spent her life trying to hide her ability to read minds. When she meets Bill Compton, a vampire whose thoughts she cannot hear, she is drawn into the supernatural underworld. The series expands to include werewolves, shapeshifters, faeries, and other creatures, all navigating a world where vampires have become legal citizens thanks to synthetic blood.
Charlaine Harris writes with warmth and humor, grounding the supernatural elements in Southern culture and small-town dynamics. Sookie is a practical, hard-working protagonist who faces extraordinary circumstances while trying to maintain her job, her house, and her sanity. The series became the basis for the HBO television series True Blood, which ran from 2008 to 2014.
