The Song of the Lioness by Tamora Pierce is the series that launched the Tortall universe. Alanna: The First Adventure (1983) introduces Alanna of Trebond, who trades places with her twin brother to train as a knight disguised as a boy. In the Hand of the Goddess (1984), The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (1986), and Lioness Rampant (1988) continue her story.
The series has been published in multiple languages, including Polish editions. Song of the Lioness established many of the themes Pierce would return to throughout her career: gender roles, courage, and the cost of pursuing your calling. It remains the foundation of the Tortall universe.
