Sebastian Snow runs an antique emporium in New York City and has a deep knowledge of Victorian America — both practically, through his shop, and intellectually, through his research. Calvin Winter is an NYPD homicide detective who becomes Snow’s reluctant partner in a series of murder cases that tend to have nineteenth-century roots or methods.
C.S. Poe draws on her real-world background as a Gilded Age historian and board director of the Victorian Society of New York to make the historical details in each book feel grounded. The series balances mystery plotting with a developing romance between the two leads — by book five (The Mystery of the Spirits), they are married — and the combination of cozy mystery tone with genuine period knowledge has made it Poe’s most widely read series.
