The Slaves of Sleep duology consists of two novels separated by fifty years of publication. Slaves of Sleep (1948) was originally serialized in the pulp magazine Unknown and tells the story of a man cursed to live parallel lives – one in the ordinary world and one in a fantasy realm populated by djinn and magical beings. The Masters of Sleep (1998) is a posthumous sequel.
These books are representative of Hubbard’s pre-Scientology fantasy writing, which was lighter and more adventure-oriented than his later science fiction. The Arabian Nights-inspired setting and the double-life premise give the stories an energy that fans of classic pulp fantasy enjoy.
