The Sisters Grimm is a nine-book children’s fantasy series by Michael Buckley, published between 2005 and 2012. The books follow Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, two sisters who discover they are descendants of the Brothers Grimm. After their parents mysteriously disappear, they are sent to live with their grandmother Relda in the town of Ferryport Landing, where fairy tale characters called Everafters live alongside ordinary humans.
The Fairy Tale Detectives (2005) opens the series as the girls learn about their heritage and begin solving magical mysteries. Each subsequent book introduces new fairy tale characters and builds on the search for the girls’ missing parents. The Unusual Suspects involves a school mystery, Once Upon a Crime takes the sisters to New York City, and The Everafter War brings open conflict between the town’s magical and human residents. The Council of Mirrors (2012) brings the series to its conclusion.
Buckley reimagines fairy tale figures as complex characters with their own agendas and grudges. The tone is lighter than some other fairy tale retellings, aimed at middle-grade readers ages 8 to 12. The series was adapted into an animated television show for Apple TV+ in 2025. Readers who enjoy fractured fairy tales and kid detective stories will find a lot to like across these nine books.
