The Singer Family series began with Lilian’s Story (1984), one of Kate Grenville’s earliest novels. It follows Lilian Singer, a large, eccentric woman living on the streets of Sydney, and gradually reveals the abuse she suffered from her father. The book was based loosely on a real Sydney figure.
Joan Makes History (1988) is connected through family themes. Dark Places (1994), also published as Albion’s Story, retells the events of Lilian’s Story from the perspective of her father, Albion. Reading the two books together gives a fuller picture of the Singer family’s history and the damage passed between generations.
