The Silvertip series is one of Max Brand’s longest-running Western franchises. Jim Silver, known as Silvertip for the streak of grey in his hair, is a loner who wanders the mountain West and repeatedly finds himself pulled into conflicts between settlers, outlaws, and corrupt authorities. The first books, Valley Thieves and The False Rider, both appeared in 1933, and Brand continued the series through thirteen volumes until 1947, three years after his death.
Silver is a classic Brand hero: quiet, physically formidable, and reluctant to fight but very good at it when pushed. What sets the Silvertip books apart from Brand’s other Western series is their consistency and length. Thirteen books gave Brand room to develop the character and his world more thoroughly than in his shorter series. The books were popular in their time and have been reprinted regularly since. Readers who enjoy a long-running Western series with a strong central character will find the Silvertip novels worth their time.
