The Silver Bush books follow Pat Gardiner, a girl whose fierce attachment to her family home on Prince Edward Island drives much of the emotional story. Pat of Silver Bush (1933) covers her childhood and teenage years, while Mistress Pat (1935) follows her into adulthood as she tries to keep Silver Bush and her family life exactly as they are.
The books are quieter than the Anne series and deal more directly with the pain of change and the impossibility of holding onto the past. Pat’s love of home is touching but also limiting, and Montgomery treats both sides of it honestly. The duology is less well known than the Anne or Emily books but has its own dedicated following.
