Shine Not Burn is one of Elle Casey’s most popular standalone romances, popular enough to earn a follow-up. The original 2013 novel sets up a classic premise: a buttoned-up lawyer discovers that a hazy Vegas night left her accidentally married to a rugged Oregon rancher. When she flies out to get the paperwork sorted, she finds that her “husband” is not exactly eager to let her go.
MacKenzie Fire, published in 2014, returns to the same characters and gives readers more time with the couple. The Vegas-marriage trope is well-worn territory in romance, but Casey’s version stands out thanks to sharp dialogue and a heroine who is both capable and genuinely flustered by the situation she has landed in. The contrast between the lawyer’s organized life and the rancher’s world provides most of the comedy and all of the chemistry.
