His Last Bow collects Sherlock Holmes stories published between 1908 and 1917, including the novel The Valley of Fear. The stories cover Holmes’s later career and show the detective dealing with espionage, international crime, and increasingly dangerous situations. The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans involves stolen submarine blueprints and is one of the best spy stories in the canon.
The title story, His Last Bow, is set during the tense days before World War I and depicts Holmes working as a counterintelligence agent against Germany. Written in 1917 while the war was still raging, it was Doyle’s patriotic tribute to his most famous character. The Valley of Fear, a full-length novel set partly in a Pennsylvania mining town, deals with Moriarty’s influence and draws on real events from the Molly Maguires labor disputes. This listing also includes an international edition.
