The Sheriff Chick Charleston Mysteries are a series of five novels by Pulitzer Prize-winning author A.B. Guthrie Jr. Beginning with Wild Pitch in 1973, the books follow Sheriff Chick Charleston and his young deputy Jason Beard as they solve murders in the small Montana town of Midbury. The crimes range from a murder at a local baseball game to a killing among English tourists.
Guthrie brings the same feel for Western landscape and character that marked his celebrated historical novels to these mysteries. The books are told from Beard’s perspective, giving them a warm, observational tone as the young man learns the detective trade from his experienced mentor. The series ran until Murder in the Cotswolds in 1989, the last novel Guthrie published before his death in 1991.
