The Shelby Nichols series begins with Carrots, in which Shelby witnesses a bank robbery and inadvertently saves a man’s life after realizing, through her new ability, that he’s about to be shot. That setup establishes the pattern the series maintains for twenty-two books: Shelby hears something she shouldn’t, gets pulled into something dangerous, and has to navigate the situation without revealing her secret.

The books are consistently fast reads, built around Shelby’s voice and the warm cast of recurring characters around her, including her husband Chris and various organized crime figures who have a complicated relationship with her abilities. The series has a soap opera quality in the best sense, with relationships and storylines that develop over time and give long-term readers plenty to track alongside each book’s central mystery.

Starting from the beginning with Carrots and reading in order is strongly recommended, both because the ongoing character arcs matter and because the series grows more confident as it goes. By the later books, the author has a clear command of what readers want from Shelby, and the longer you’ve spent with the character the more satisfying each new installment becomes.
