Shakespeare Undead takes the premise of William Shakespeare as a secret zombie hunter and runs with it. The first book, published in 2010, is set in 1590s London and has Shakespeare battling the undead while also falling for a woman who is disguised as a boy actor in his theater company. The sequel, Zombie Island, moved the action to a remote island setting in 2012.
The series is a departure from Handeland’s usual paranormal romance work. It is more of a genre mashup, combining historical fiction, horror comedy, and romance in a way that does not take itself too seriously. If you like your Shakespeare with a side of zombies, these books deliver exactly that.
