S.F. Said’s standalone work Tyger (2022) is set in an alternate version of London where the British Empire never fell. Adam, a boy from a minority community living within a walled Ghetto, discovers a talking tiger during a delivery run. The two form an unlikely bond in a world defined by imperial control and lost freedoms. Like all of Said’s books, Tyger features illustrations by Dave McKean.
The novel won several awards, including Children’s Fiction Book of the Year at the 2023 British Book Awards and Foyles Children’s Book of the Year. It was also named Children’s Book of the Year (Older Fiction) at The Week Junior Book Awards.
