Sexton Blake is one of British fiction’s longest-running detective characters, originally created in 1893 and published across hundreds of stories in magazines and comics throughout the twentieth century. Mark Hodder’s Library series brings the character back in a set of standalone anthology volumes, each collecting new or restored adventures written for the modern reader. The series began in 2014 with The Silent Thunder Caper and has continued through to 2023’s Caribbean Crisis and Voodoo Island.
The books in this series cover a range of settings and tones, from Great War espionage in Sexton Blake and the Great War to criminal underworld stories in Sexton Blake and the Master Crooks. Several volumes focus on wartime Britain, with Sexton Blake on the Home Front and Sexton Blake’s New Order examining the detective’s activities during periods of national crisis. The series is published by Obverse Books, which has made a project of reviving classic British genre characters.
Readers new to Sexton Blake can start anywhere in the Library series, as the individual volumes function as standalone collections. Fans of classic British crime and adventure fiction, particularly those who enjoy the style of early twentieth-century pulp storytelling brought into a contemporary format, are the primary audience for this series.
