The Serge A. Storms series by Tim Dorsey (1961-2023) is a 27-book comic crime saga set across Florida. The series follows Serge A. Storms, a manic, history-obsessed vigilante who drives around the state with his perpetually stoned sidekick Coleman, dispensing violent justice against criminals, scammers, and rude tourists while delivering encyclopedia-length monologues about Florida history and culture.
Dorsey, a former reporter for the Tampa Tribune, published the first book, Florida Roadkill, in 1999 and continued the series almost annually until The Maltese Iguana in 2023. The titles reference Florida wildlife, geography, and pop culture (Torpedo Juice, Coconut Cowboy, Mermaid Confidential), and the books mix slapstick comedy with genuine affection for the state’s weirdness. Each novel works as a standalone, though recurring characters and running jokes reward readers who follow the series in order.
Dorsey built a loyal following for these books, which have been compared to the work of Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry, two other Florida-based comic crime writers. The series captures a particular vision of the Sunshine State: absurd, dangerous, and impossible to look away from.
