Serenity’s Plain Secrets is Karen Ann Hopkins’s longest-running series, with 21 books published between 2014 and 2025. The series follows Sheriff Serenity Adams as she investigates murders and other violent crimes in the fictional Amish community of Blood Rock, Indiana. The first book, Lamb to the Slaughter, opens with the discovery of a teenage Amish girl shot dead in a cornfield during the harvest. What looks like an accident turns out to be something far worse, and Serenity has to navigate the closed-off Amish world to find answers.
Each book brings a new case, but the series also tracks Serenity’s personal life, including her relationship with Daniel Bachman, a man who was shunned by the Amish community years earlier. Hopkins uses the tension between the Amish settlement and the outside world as the backbone of her plots, with secrets, family loyalties, and cultural boundaries driving both the mysteries and the character drama. Later books deal with mass shootings, organized crime, and cases that pull in characters from Hopkins’s connected Possum Gap series. The Blood Rock setting also appears in the Crossroads companion series, which focuses on romance rather than crime.
