Septology is Jon Fosse’s most acclaimed prose work, a seven-part novel that follows Asle, an aging painter living on the western coast of Norway, as he reflects on his life, his art, and his faith. The novel is written as a single flowing stream of consciousness, without chapter breaks or periods, creating a hypnotic reading experience.
The English translation by Damion Searls was published in three volumes: The Other Name (2020), I Is Another (2021), and A New Name (2021). A complete single-volume edition followed in 2022. The series also includes several editions in Danish and Norwegian. Septology played a major role in Fosse’s Nobel Prize recognition.
