Big David, Little David (1995) is S.E. Hinton’s only picture book. It follows a boy named Nick who names his new kitten David — the same name as his father — causing playful mix-ups in the household.
Published the same year as The Puppy Sister, this was part of a brief period when Hinton wrote for younger children. The humor comes from Nick calling out “David!” and having both his father and the kitten respond. It is a lighthearted domestic story, far removed from the Tulsa gang conflicts of The Outsiders. For Hinton fans, the picture book is a collector’s item more than a reading staple, but it shows another side of the author’s imagination.
