Sawbones is a two-book Western series that puts a frontier doctor at the center of the action. The nickname “sawbones” was common slang for a physician on the frontier, where medical practice often involved more grit than formal training. The main character’s medical skills make him valuable to everyone he meets, which turns out to be as much a curse as a blessing when outlaws and desperate men come calling.
Both books were published in 2017. Never Seen Deader kicks things off, followed by the self-titled Sawbones. J.A. Johnstone built the series around the idea that a doctor on the frontier couldn’t just patch people up and walk away. The people he saved, and the ones he couldn’t, had a way of creating complications that only a gun could sort out. It’s a compact series with a premise that sets it apart from the usual lawman-and-outlaw formula.
