Justin Savile V is a hard-drinking detective from Hillston’s oldest money. Cuddy Mangum is a fast-talking cop from the wrong side of town. They should not work well together, but they do.
Uncivil Seasons (1983) introduces them through Justin’s narration as they investigate a murder tangled in Hillston’s class hierarchies. Time’s Witness (1989) shifts to Cuddy’s voice for a case that brings racial politics to the surface. First Lady (2001) returns to Justin’s perspective for a final case that pulls together the town’s secrets. Michael Malone used the mystery format to write about the American South — its money, its history, and the fault lines that run through small-town life.
