Savage Texas is a five-book series set during one of the roughest periods in the state’s history: the years right after the Civil War. Texas in the late 1860s was a place where Confederate veterans, Union occupiers, bandits, and Comanche raiders all collided, and J.A. Johnstone uses that chaos as the backdrop for a series packed with gunfights and frontier violence.
The books ran from 2011 to 2016, opening with the self-titled Savage Texas and continuing through A Good Day to Die, The Stampeders, Rebel Yell, and Seven Days to Hell. Each installment captures a different slice of post-war Texas, from cattle drives gone wrong to full-scale battles between rival factions. The historical setting gives the series a grittier edge than many Johnstone Westerns. If you want your frontier fiction with a strong sense of time and place, and you don’t mind the violence that comes with it, Savage Texas is worth a look.
