Sarah Prineas’s standalone novels show her range beyond her main fantasy series. Dragonfell (2019) follows Rafi, a boy whose unusual appearance and immunity to temperature set him apart from his village. When strangers arrive demanding the villagers hand him over, Rafi flees and teams up with Maud, a girl who calls herself a dragon scientist. Together they discover a plot to slaughter dragons and uncover the truth about Rafi’s connection to them.
Trouble in the Stars (2021) and its sequel Asking for Trouble (2022) mark Prineas’s first venture into science fiction. The protagonist is Trouble, a shapeshifter who can shift between a blob of goo, a puppy, and a human child. Trouble stows away on the starship Hindsight, crewed by Captain Astra, and gets tangled up with a StarLeague cadet named Electra. The sequel follows Trouble training a rescued baby shapeshifter while Electra leads a mission to free other cadets from the military academy where she grew up.
All three books are aimed at middle grade readers and share Prineas’s characteristic blend of humor, adventure, and invented worlds, though each stands on its own.
