Sarah Dunant’s seven standalone novels span from 1995 to 2025 and chart her transition from thriller writer to historical novelist. Snow Storms In A Hot Climate (1995), Transgressions (1997), and Mapping the Edge (1999) are contemporary thrillers with psychological depth. Mapping the Edge, about a woman who vanishes during a trip to Italy, is particularly well regarded.
The Birth of Venus (2003) marked Dunant’s shift to Renaissance historical fiction, telling the story of a young woman in 15th-century Florence. In the Company of the Courtesan (2006) moves to Venice, narrated by a dwarf who serves a famous courtesan, and Sacred Hearts (2008) is set in a convent in Ferrara. The Marchesa (2025) is her most recent novel, continuing to explore Italian historical settings.
