Sarah Bourne’s five standalone novels explore how a single event can reshape someone’s life. Her debut, The Train (2021), follows eight strangers on a commuter train who are connected by one morning’s tragedy. It was praised for its shifting perspectives and emotional realism. That same year she published Ella’s War, a historical novel about a WWII nurse who wakes up in a hospital with no memory of who she is, and InVisible, which looks at how people become unseen by those around them.
Exile (2022) continued her interest in characters under pressure, and Letting Go (2025) is her most recent novel. Each book stands on its own with a separate cast and setting, so they can be read in any order. Bourne’s background as a counsellor shows in her character work, and her novels tend to focus on the psychological fallout of difficult moments rather than action or plot twists.
