Each book takes a different setting and period from the age of the British Empire. The Secret Mandarin follows a Victorian woman sent to China, Secret of the Sands is set among Arabian explorers in the 1850s, and The Ice Maiden takes place on a polar expedition. The Fair Botanists (2021), set in 1820s Edinburgh during the arrival of a rare plant at the Botanic Garden, won the Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year. The books can be read in any order.
