Sandman Slim is Richard Kadrey’s longest and most popular series, running thirteen books from 2009 to 2021. The story follows James Stark, a magician who was sent to Hell alive by a rival, survived eleven years fighting in the gladiatorial arenas of the underworld, and then broke back out to Los Angeles looking for revenge. The series blends urban fantasy with noir crime fiction and dark comedy, set in a version of LA where angels, demons, and old gods operate alongside the usual human population.
The books track Stark’s evolution from a revenge-driven loner into someone with deeper connections and larger responsibilities, including repeated jobs for various supernatural factions. The series maintains its dark, wisecracking tone throughout, even as the stakes escalate from personal grudges to threats against the entire fabric of reality. Devil in the Dollhouse, a novella, slots between the third and fourth main entries.
