Lois Lowry spun off the Sam Krupnik series from the Anastasia books, giving Anastasia’s younger brother his own four-novel run from 1988 to 1999. The books follow Sam from toddlerhood through kindergarten, capturing the way very young children experience and misunderstand the world around them.
All About Sam is narrated partly from Sam’s point of view, a tricky thing to pull off with a character so young. Lowry managed it by focusing on the gap between what Sam understands and what readers can see happening, creating comedy from the disconnect. Attaboy, Sam!, See You Around, Sam!, and Zooman Sam continued tracking his growth, with each book reflecting a slightly older and more capable (if still charmingly confused) protagonist.
