Paul Watkins published his debut novel Night Over Day Over Night in 1988, a story set during the final days of World War II following a young German soldier. His early books established him as a literary writer with a talent for atmosphere and physical detail, earning strong reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
Through the 1990s and 2000s, Watkins moved across genres and settings with each new book. Calm at Sunset, Calm at Dawn is set among fishermen in Rhode Island, The Promise of Light takes place during the Irish Troubles, and Thunder God plunges into the world of Viking raiders. The Ice Soldier follows two British climbers haunted by a wartime mission in the Alps. His most recent standalone, The Elegant Lie, appeared in 2019.
