Sam Dryden is a former special forces soldier trying to live quietly when he encounters a terrified girl being chased by armed men in Runner (2014). The truth behind her situation — and why she’s being hunted — drives the first book into increasingly high-stakes territory involving capabilities that skirt the edge of science fiction.
Signal (2015) and Dark Site (2019) continue Dryden’s involvement with threats that combine government conspiracy with technology or abilities beyond the ordinary. Lee paces the books with the same urgency as the Travis Chase trilogy — short chapters, constant forward momentum — but the Sam Dryden books feel somewhat more grounded, the threats more human in origin even when their tools are extraordinary.
