The Sackwater Mysteries moved M.R.C. Kasasian from Victorian London to wartime Suffolk. Betty Church and the Suffolk Vampire (2018) introduced Inspector Church, a woman running a police station in a small coastal town during World War II. The Room of the Dead and The Ghost Tree continued the series through 2020.
The wartime setting creates a different kind of mystery from the Gower Street books. Rationing, air raids, and the absence of men at war all shape the crimes and the investigation. Betty Church is a capable, determined detective working in a world that does not always respect her authority. Kasasian’s dark humor carries over from the earlier series, applied now to the absurdities of wartime bureaucracy.
