The Ruthenia Quintet by Olen Steinhauer consists of five novels published between 2003 and 2007. Each book is set in a different decade of life in the fictional Communist state of Ruthenia, following members of the national police force as they navigate crime, politics, and ideology. The Bridge of Sighs opens in the late 1940s, and the series moves forward through The Confession, 36 Yalta Boulevard, Liberation Movements, and Victory Square.
Steinhauer uses the structure to show how totalitarian rule evolves over time, and how the people living under it adapt, resist, or become complicit. The series earned strong critical praise and established Steinhauer as a serious literary voice in the spy and political thriller genre.
