The Rusty Sabin Saga is one of several Max Brand series that explore the idea of a man caught between cultures. Rusty Sabin, a white man raised by the Cheyenne from childhood, knows no other life than theirs. Called Red Hawk by his adopted people, he is a skilled warrior, but his red hair and pale skin mark him as an outsider in both worlds. The first novel, published in 1934, sets up this central tension.
Brother of the Cheyennes, also from 1934, continues Sabin’s story as he is forced to confront the growing conflict between white settlers and the Cheyenne. Cheyenne Gold, published posthumously in 1972, concludes the saga. Brand returned to the “white man raised by Native Americans” premise in his Thunder Moon series as well, suggesting it was a theme that held real interest for him. The Rusty Sabin books take the idea more seriously than many Westerns of the era, and Sabin’s divided loyalty gives the series an emotional weight beyond the action.
