The Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child follows a thirteen-year-old genius code-cracker who is recruited by a secret agency called Spectrum. Ruby lives in Twinford with her glamorous but oblivious parents and her loyal butler, Hitch, who also happens to be her Spectrum handler. The books blend spy gadgets, code-breaking puzzles, and humor with a strong-willed protagonist who always has a snappy comeback.
Ruby Redfort started as a fictional character inside Child’s Clarice Bean books, where Clarice is a devoted fan of the Ruby Redfort spy novels. Reader demand eventually led Child to write them for real, beginning with Look Into My Eyes in 2011. The main series consists of six novels that follow an overarching story, with Ruby facing increasingly dangerous villains and learning that even the smartest person needs to rely on others sometimes.
Alongside the novels, there are companion books including the Hang in There Bozo survival guide. The series wraps up with Blink and You Die in 2016, bringing Ruby’s story to a conclusion.
